BLACK SWAN: Cygnus atratus

Identifying characteristics:

• Very large black bird with long slender neck and white tipped wings.

• Dark red and orange bill with white bar near tip.

Distribution: 

• Found in south east and south west parts of Australia, Side inlets in Tinaroo dam, Nardellos Lagoon, near Walkman and occasionally at Hasties swamp near Atherton.

Habitat:

• Found in large expanses of open water, fresh through to salt, with abundant aquatic vegetation.

Call:

• musical trumpeting calls.
